In the heart of Park Slope, where families prioritize health, education, and community, early orthodontic care is becoming a smart part of growing up. But with so much information out there, many parents wonder: When should I start thinking about braces or aligners for my child—and what does the process actually look like?
At Methal Dental Arts, we believe in proactive care that sets your child up for a lifetime of confident smiles. Here's what every Brooklyn parent should know.
When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.
That doesn’t mean they’ll need braces right away—but early exams allow us to catch potential issues like:
Crowding or spacing
Overbites or underbites
Crossbites
Jaw growth concerns
Early or late loss of baby teeth
Thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habits
Why so early? At age 7, most kids have a mix of baby and adult teeth, making it easier to guide development before problems become harder (and more expensive) to correct later on.
What Is Interceptive Orthodontics?
Also known as Phase 1 treatment, interceptive orthodontics addresses developing bite issues in younger children—usually between ages 7–10. It may involve:
Palatal expanders
Space maintainers
Limited braces
Habit correction appliances
The goal is to guide the growth of the jaw and create the space needed for adult teeth to come in properly. Phase 2 (traditional braces or aligners) usually happens later, around ages 11–14.
Signs Your Child May Need Orthodontic Help
Keep an eye out for these red flags:
Difficulty chewing or biting
Mouth breathing
Snoring or sleep issues
Clicking jaws or facial asymmetry
Crowded, overlapping, or spaced-out teeth
Premature loss of baby teeth
Persistent thumb-sucking past age 5
If you notice any of these signs, it’s time for a consultation.
How to Prepare for the Orthodontic Journey
Whether you're just getting started or gearing up for braces, here's how to make it easier for everyone involved:
🦷 Build positive dental habits early – Brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings make future orthodontic care smoother.
📅 Keep consistent dental visits – We’ll monitor your child’s development closely and refer out for specialized orthodontic care when needed.
🗣️ Talk about it – Ease fears by involving your child in the process. Show them what to expect and frame it positively.
🍽️ Plan for soft foods during adjustment periods – Think mashed potatoes, smoothies, mac & cheese—comfort foods are key.
📸 Take “before” photos – Watching their smile transform can be motivating and fun!
